Question:   Do I have to follow the format of the personal statement? Answer: Yes.   Our personal statement is broken into three parts, each with an associated word limit.   Applicants should follow the instructions and keep within the stated word limits.   Applicants that obviously try to substitute a statement written according to another school’s guidance are judged harshly in the admissions process.   Following directions is an important part of the process of applying. The majority of this entry addresses the first part of the personal statement.   We generally do not provide instructions regarding the second part because we want each applicant to answer in their own way.   For the second part, we are interested on how applicants choose to respond to the question and thus have no specific advice. Another note is that your answer to section one should not simply be your résumé in paragraph format.   In order to get your point across in your personal statement it might be necessary to restate information already included in your résumé, however do not restate information without a specific reason or goal. One thing not to do for example is to tell us in your personal statement where you went to school.   Many applicants will mention the name of their school in the personal statement.  What is wrong with this?   Well, you sent us your transcript and you state where you went to school in your résumé, why would we need to be told a third time where you went to school?   Use your personal statement to get across new information that might not be contained in other parts of your application. USS Langley - The US Navys First Aircraft Carrier

Laid down on October 18, 1911, at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA, USS Langley (CV-1) began its life as the Proteus-class collier USS Jupiter (AC-3). Its keel-laying ceremony was attended by President William H. Taft. Work continued through the winter and the collier was launched on April 14, 1912. The US Navys first turbo-electric-powered ship, Jupiter joined the fleet in April 1913, under the command of Commander Joseph M. Reeves. USS Jupiter Shortly after passing sea trials, Jupiter was sent south to the Mexican coast off Mazatlà ¡n. Carrying a detachment of US Marines, the Navy hoped that the ships presence would aid in calming tensions during the 1914 Veracruz crisis. With the situation diffused, the collier departed for Philadelphia in October, becoming the first ship to transit the Panama Canal from west to east in the process. After service with the Atlantic Fleet Auxiliary Division in the Gulf of Mexico, Jupiter was switched to cargo duty in April 1917. Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transport Service, Jupiter sailed in support of US efforts during World War I, and made two cargo voyages to Europe (June 1917 and November 1918).   During its first Atlantic crossing, the collier carried a naval aviation detachment commanded by Lieutenant Kenneth Whiting. These were the first American military aviators to reach Europe. Returning to coaling duties in January 1919, Jupiter operated in European waters to facilitate the return of troops serving with the American Expeditionary Forces following the end of the war. Later that year, the ship received orders to return to Norfolk for conversion into an aircraft carrier. Arriving on December 12, 1919, the ship was decommissioned the following March. The US Navys First Aircraft Carrier Work began immediately to convert the ship, which was renamed in honor of aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley on April 21, 1920. In the yard, workers reduced the ships superstructure and built a flight deck over the length of the ship. The vessels two funnels were moved outboard and an elevator constructed for moving aircraft between decks. Completed in early 1922, Langley was designated CV-1 and commissioned on March 20, with Whiting, now a commander, in command. The firsts continued on November 18, when Whiting became the first naval aviator to be catapulted from a carrier when he launched in a PT. Steaming south in early 1923, Langley continued aviation testing in the warm waters of the Caribbean before sailing to Washington DC that June to conduct a flight demonstration and show its capabilities to governmental officials. Returning to active duty, Langley operated out of Norfolk for much of 1924, and underwent its first overhaul late that summer. Putting to sea that fall, Langley transited the Panama Canal and joined the Pacific Battle Fleet on November 29. For the next dozen years, the ship served with the fleet off Hawaii and California working to training aviators, conducting aviation experiments, and taking part in war games. With the arrival of the larger carriers Lexington (CV-2) and Saratoga (CV-3) and the near completion of Yorktown (CV-5) and Enterprise (CV-6), the Navy decided that the little Langley was no longer needed as a carrier. Seaplane Tender On October 25, 1936, Langley arrived at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for conversion into a seaplane tender. After removing the forward section of the flight deck, workers built a new superstructure and bridge, while the aft end of the ship was altered to accommodate the ships new role. Re-designated AV-3, Langley sailed in April 1937. Following a brief assignment in the Atlantic during early 1939, the ship sailed for the Far East, reaching Manila on September 24. When World War II began, the ship was anchored nearby at Cavite. On December 8, 1941, Langley departed the Philippines for Balikpapan, Dutch East Indies before finally making for Darwin, Australia. World War II During the first half of January 1942, Langley aided the Royal Australian Air Force in conducting anti-submarine patrols out of Darwin. Receiving new orders, the ship sailed north later that month to deliver 32 P-40 Warhawks to Allied forces at Tjilatjap, Java and to join American‑British‑Dutch‑Australian forces gathering to block the Japanese advance into Indonesia. On February 27, shortly after meeting with its antisubmarine screen, the destroyers USS Whipple and USS Edsall, Langley was attacked by a flight of nine Japanese G4M Betty bombers. Successfully evading the first two Japanese bombing runs, the ship was hit five times on the third, causing the topsides to burst in to flames and the ship to develop a 10-degree list to port. Limping towards Tjilatjap Harbor, Langley lost power and was unable to negotiate the mouth of the harbor. At 1:32 PM, the ship was abandoned and the escorts moved into sink the hulk to prevent its capture by the Japanese. Sixteen of Langleys crew were killed in the attack.

Library and Language materials are placed near the window that is providing enough sun light to have successful visual special activities (matching, writing and reading).Math shelves are placed away from the rest of the materials in the area B, which allows to have an individual or one-to-one mathematic activity, that would require concentration. Censorial is near by the centre open space (later centre rug), this fact help all the children often work with Censorial materials. The social environment supports individual, one-to-one, small group, and large group activities (lots of tea-parties, children are working at tables in rope of four- numbers of the chairs at a table). Here are the main issues of the environment that came up during my observation sessions: A.Area A is too crowded and therefore Often noisy and messy. B. Some children do run through the class (some fall). They run from the toilet in area B and through the long alley of the area A). C. Some materials are seldom used (or not used at all). D. On the contrary of the c some of the art materials are wasted or not used properly (glue, paper, markers, and other rare collage items (shells, pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes, etc. )). E. Children are not using area B, or they are sing it to hide. F. Week and messy food preparation/snack activities.G. Lack of floor mats (only 6 mats). During our team discussion with Sabina and Amy we have added couple Of more problems in the list to solve, such as: H. Art shelf is blocked by one of the tables, causing traffic and difficulty clean up, to pick up and put away materials. I. Not organized snack time procedure and other transitions (lining up, washing hands). J. Lack of plants and other nature objects in the class (not enough to make a big class as mine 27 children to keep care of the plants: watering dusting and simply enjoying its existence.K. A new center rug gift from school (all my team is against that piece of environment). Environmental changes team discussion. Have gathered my team on September 30th (last working day before October national holidays break) for 60 minutes discussion about changes we have to make in our environment. The discussion was started by me, exposing all the issues Ive taken evidence of not only during my nine scheduled observations, but the questions I kept concerns even before observations.Sabina Ghana and Amy added their ideas to the list (written above), and after hat we have stared our discussion of possible solutions. During our next classroom meeting (after national holidays) we have discussed of the changes timing terms and shared responsibilities to have all the necessary preparations if needed. Personally like it, but we had to experiment and solve problems that it causes: running alley, crowdedness in the area A, blocking art shelves. Here is the set of changes we have discussed to take: Invent the concept of seats per table by having a sticker on the table -a working place sign.That way we can regulate the number Of children at a table during morning and afternoon working time and as a result the working seats in the whole area A. However we have to move unnecessary chairs away after breakfast. (Yellow circle at the side of table). Move the Art Table that was blocking the access to the art area out of the table line onto the path of running alley between two shelves, near by a plant. Provide this table with three yellow circles three working seats (so it would block more space on the running alley). Two solutions with a single move!C) Materials that are seldom used (my solution) Easel stand. It was located next to teachers table for two months. I personally used it during whole class group times to model drawing and writing, and I valuate the effect of using it above average, since children were willing to participate I spy letters game and printing letters activities. But this was it no child choose an easel to work during Interiors working time (nor black board, nor painting). Our decision is to move the easel into an open area, next to art shelves, to bring children habit of using it. Metal Insets.No child had Metal Insets work in a month of September. There were pencils, CACM paper sheets, trays and pencil stands. Our solution is to display Metal Insets samples on the wall next to the Metal Insets work. D) Wasted Art Materials (Sprains solution) Limit the art supplies to a certain number, according to the planned theme activities. Promote Sabina Ghana to control art area. E) Hide and seek in the area B (consolidated) The whole area B was taken by children as a little COZY vestibule: they change their clothes and may stay for a chat with their mates. Some children who had emotional troubles in separating with their parents were hiding next to their scabies for 30-60 minutes. The area was not small, but still not big enough to attract having a work on the floor. The large table was hidden behind math shelves and mostly ignored by the students.The solution Ive advised was to move Math shelves closer to the center rug (now that rug vividly distinguishes the soft-sitting-lying-playing-group work area, from the rest of the room. So we kept enough space on the side of area A to freely move back and forth and to approach materials on the shelves; t the same time we have visibly enlarged area B space, so that it could be considered as a cozy place to have a small project that may require extra isolation and concentration.Besides we have installed two Dramatic Play sites: building blocks with roads and transportation; and the Restaurant setup with cooking desk, dining table and cashier. In our expectations we wanted to have averagely 5 to 7 children busy in the area B. This was to be the first war in which a man could rarely see his enemy. One would just shoot his gun and hope for the best. Trenches played a major role in this war. In fact the whole war revolved around trench warfare. This is not the only war to use trench warfare, but it was a much bigger conflict than any of the others. Soldiers lived, ate, slept, fought, and died in the trenches. This drove some men crazy. The British troops were forced to stay in a big muddy ditch and listen to millions of shells explode and just hope that the Germans are dying. The Germans were just trying to outlast the bombardment, and they were awaiting the attack of the British infantry. This must have affected their morale a great deal. But the question is, what were effects of the conditions in the trenches on the morale of the soldiers? It is believed that living in the trenches would have greatly hurt the morale of the soldiers because it was such horrible place to be. With the advancement of artillery technology for indirect fire (lobbing bombs onto an enemy rather than shooting directly at him) and the unlimited mass of firepower brought onto the battlefield, soldiers of the First World War quickly found themselves living underground in huge trench/bunker systems for their own survival. Since soldiers were just lobbing bombs towards the enemys trenches, it was necessary to bury oneself as much as possible. So the Germans made massive trenches, some over one hundred and fifty feet deep, to bear the heavy artillery firing of the British. It takes the humanity out of the soldiers lives. They become like little mice just hiding for protection. Their minds tend to stop thinking intellectual thoughts and start becoming all consumed with survival. In a sense they become animals, because that is what separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. Being able to carry on intellectual conversations and have intellectual thoughts is an important part of humanity. Would this have an effect on the morale of the soldiers? Lacking the ability to have these intellectual thoughts, would the soldiers even notice that they are losing their humanity? That is a tough question and it may have no true answer, but it is an important concept to take into consideration when dealing with trench warfare. The conditions of the trenches varied depending on which army you were fighting with. It seems that the Germans were much better prepared for this type of combat, for they had been planning far in advance. The German trench system was much more evolved, and they were prepared to stay there as long as necessary. The British on the other hand thought that the trenches would be temporary. They had planned on advancing soon after arriving. They were unaware that the Germans had anticipated such a move, and they were also unaware that the Germans trenches could with stand such bombardment. Since the British were not prepared to live in their trenches, this left many problems for their soldiers to deal with. When the bombing ceased and the British attacked, the Germans were supposed to already be dead, but to no avail. The Germans had strategically placed their machine guns around so that all the shells that had been coming towards them for the last week did not hit them. This enabled the gunners to slaughter the attacking British soldiers. That was when morale should have hit rock bottom. The troops were being forced out of their temporary homes just to be mowed down by some machine gun they couldnt even see. There is not much humanity in that. That would wear down at ones self esteem and make it hard to want to follow orders. As a result morale would be low. One disadvantage is that, during the dispute resolution process, trust between the parties may be sorely tested, or even destroyed. By having thorough knowledge and information in this tool/database, it will definitely help the project manager and contract manager to anticipate problems at an early stage of the project without going through any other Alternative Dispute Resolution method which will cost extra money on the top of the project cost. INTRODUCTION Malaysia has been developing rapidly in tandem and racing a head to become industrialised nation. Undoubtedly, the building and construction industry are instrumental as the driving forces to contribute towards realising this aspiration. The construction industries are expected to play a vital role by contribution of 11.2% to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013.  [1]  According to CIDB Chief Executive Datuk Sri Dr. Judin Abdul Karim, the construction industry is expected to secure RM 120bil worth of the project in 2013.  [2]  In order to achieve this encouraging but challenging target, the Government and the private sector must work closely together to ensure projects under the Economic Transformation Program (ETP), the Entry Point Project (EPP), project under the 5 corridors and the Greater Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley are implemented in the timely manner to avoid any delays that would increase cost. The construction industry in Malaysia is fast growing and in light of the economy uncertainty, the world is now facing, great challenges face players in the industry. Dispute amongst parties involved in the industry are unavoidable. It would be impossible to create an environment where the industry would not be affected but great effort should be expended to minimize the effect that would be failing the industry. To do so, it is important that disputes be resolved in the most expedient and economic manner to enable parties in the industry to move forward without being badly affected. BACKGROUND STUDY Modern day construction projects vary from simple houses for individuals to complex infrastructure projects for governments. Some construction projects may even involve cross border movement of resources and not limited to the control of a single jurisdiction. A variety of factors, including, unfair allocation of risks, multiple contracts, unrealistic expectations and schedules, poorly drafted or inadequate contract documents, design omissions, tighter funding, the lack of experienced personnel, communication problems, and even the state of the economy, add to the complexity of construction projects. As a result, construction projects are a breeding ground for contractual dispute. Cooke J in Canterbury Pipe Lines Ltd v Christchurch Drainage Board  [3]  said Building contracts have been traditionally a fertile source of disputesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ The enunciation aptly summarizes the very nature of construction industry as an industry notorious for complex disputes.  [4]  The primary cause of such disputes arises from inadequate legal knowledge.  [5]  Majority of construction practitioners comes from technical engineering and architectural background without adequate legal knowledge in contracts and this has led to numerous disputes in construction contracts. Lack of knowledge in construction laws by construction players has been the leading cause of dispute. Employers, Consultants and Contractors though with years of experiences in the industry are usually lacking of the legal knowledge and understanding on the operation and effects of various clauses in construction contracts in general and handling dispute. The lacking in understanding the legal and contractual aspects of contract may be caused by not having the experience to undergo the process itself or just plain ignorance of the topic overridden by over-zealous attitude of churning maximum profits and in the understanding that legal experts are there to provide all the required advice and service. Lack of knowledge in construction law will lead to wrong interpretation of contracts in which the party tends to take trivial matters to the dispute. Arbitration in the construction context is often as bad or worse According to Hibberd and Newman  [7]  , litigation gains an unpopular name when time goes on. They quote that A substantial majority (70%) suggested the whole system takes too long, whilst almost 30% suggested that the costs of litigation are far too high. As the litigation cannot solve dispute effectively, arbitration had been introduced. Professionals believed that arbitration can solve the problems without ignoring the main desire of clients. Most of the clients depend on those who know contract better than them. They hope these professional can help them with the lowest cost and fastest way to solve the problem. There is much truth in the old adage that prevention is better than cure. The various dispute resolution processes referred to mediation, conciliation and arbitration all suffer two particular disadvantages, which arise from the fact that these processes only come into play when a dispute has crystallized. One disadvantage is that, during the dispute resolution process, trust between the parties may be sorely tested, or even destroyed. The extent to which this occurs is likely to be proportional to the time and cost (in both money and resources) of resolving the dispute. As ongoing trust between contracting parties is such an essential ingredient of healthy and efficient project delivery, this can be a significant disadvantage in a continuing relationship such as will typically be found in a BOOT project. The longer and more acrimonious the dispute resolution process, the greater the likelihood that there will be a loss of trust in any continuing relationship. By having a readily accessible resource such as e-Construction Dispute Model (e-CDM) which the parties can access during the course of the project at any construction stages, the impact of disputes is minimized. In contrast to the dispute resolution processes earlier described, e-CDM seek to avoid or minimize the incidence of disputes by a timely, little costly and relatively informal process which takes place while the work is in progress. Used effectively, they can lead to a reinforcement and enhancement of trust, with a positive impact on the project as construction unfolds. PROBLEM STATEMENT The construction industry is notorious for high levels of conflicts and disputes. It is a project based industry with each project being unique. Some construction projects may even involve cross border movement of resources and not limited to the control of a single jurisdiction. A variety of factors, including, unfair allocation unfair allocation of risks, multiple contracts, unrealistic expectations and schedules, poorly drafted or inadequate contract documents, design omissions, tighter funding, the lack of experienced personnel, communication problems, and even the state of the economy, add to the complexity of construction projects. As a result, construction projects are a breeding ground for contractual disputes.  [8]   It could be said that the adversarial nature of the construction industry contributes to the germination and manifestation of construction disputes. As such, the construction industry has been at the forefront of the search for effective and efficient dispute resolution mechanisms. Project procurement and construction disputes are two of the major concerns in the construction industry worldwide.  [9]  There is now a wide armoury of dispute resolution methods available for resolving construction disputes. The most popular out of these being litigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes such as arbitration, mediation, and conciliation. These dispute resolution processes suffer two key disadvantages, which arise from the fact that these processes only come into play after a dispute has arisen. One disadvantage is that, during the dispute resolution process, trust between the parties may be sorely tested, or even destroyed. The other disadvantage is that the time and cost of resolving a dispute may affect the expected project gains of parties concerned. In the circumstances, the current trend is to look for methods other than processes such as litigation, arbitration, mediation, and conciliation that could be put in motion before or at least, soon after a conflict has arisen. The aim is to ensure that dispute prevention measures, or at least measures for minimizing the scope of any dispute is put in place before the parties positions have hardened. Traditionally, resolving construction disputes are done through litigation. This can be confirmed by 72 cases related to building contract being reported by the Malayan Law Journal between 1990 and 2007 and the Current Law Journal which reported about 200 cases of construction related issues since 2004.  [10]  Yet, today the litigation procedures have fallen into disrepute, particularly due to excessive costs, delays, procedural complexity and adversarial approach.  [11]  The earlier research have come out with the new approach by developing eDR model but it only focus on on contractual variations  [12]  in construction projects. The lacking of law knowledge in every term of contact still needs to be addressed. It is essential in construction industry to adopt an anticipative approach to management. Since disputes have been one of the major factors affecting cost and time, it is necessary to determine the classification of dispute from the construction law cases and then the e-CDM can be the tool/database to prevent the conflicts or disputes at any stages of construction. By having thorough knowledge and information in this tool/database, it will definitely help the project manager and contract manager to anticipate problems at an early stage of the project without going through any other Alternative Dispute Resolution method which will cost extra money on the top of the project cost. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE The objective of this study are: To classification the types of dispute in the Malaysian construction industry base on the related law cases; To develop an e-CDM model as the database for construction industry; and To develop an application of e-CDP prototype/system based on types of the disputes, the parties involved, type of the project, when do the disputes occurred, and standard form of contract for the project. RESEARCH AIM The research has highlighted the problem statements on poor understanding of contract administration and lack of contractual knowledge toward the most litigious issue in construction. Therefore, the aim of this research is to classify the types of dispute based on related law cases in construction and subsequently propose and develop eCDM tool/database on construction disputes as an alternative way for resolving disputes in construction projects. SCOPE OF STUDIES This research is limited to the following:- a) To construction disputes reported by Malayan Law Journal. b) Cases related to Building Contract in Malaysia. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Briefly, this research will be carried out with five (5) different stages: Identifying the research issue Literature review Data and information collection Data and information collection Research analysis Data and information collection Conclusion and recommendations Data and information collection Identifying the Research Issue Identifying the research issue is the very initial stage from the whole research. Initial literature review was done in order to obtain the overview of the particular research topic. In identifying the issue, firstly, it will involves reading on various sources of published materials such as journals, articles, seminar papers, cases, previous research papers, or other related research materials, newspapers, magazines and electronic resources as well as World Wide Web and online e-databases from UM librarys website.  [13]  At the same time, discussions with supervisors, lecturers, as well as course mates have been done to gain more ideas and knowledge relating to the topic. Literature Review The second stage in executing a research is literature review. Literature review stage is basically a stage when the researcher will be reading and also need to criticize on each and every material that has been read. Published resources, like books, journals, varies standard form of contract and related statutory are the most helpful sources in this stage. Literature review also will be involving the collection of documents from the secondary data research, such as books, journals, newspapers.  [14]   Data and Information Collection This stage is data and information collection stage. This is an important stage towards achieving the objectives of this research. In this stage, the further action is to collect the relevant information based on the secondary data from the published resources. Lexis-Nexis database which provides cases of Malayan Law Journal is the main sources in getting the related cases. Research Analysis During this stage, all of the data collected data, information, ideas, opinions and comments were specifically arranged, analyze and also will be interpreted based on the literature view which will be carried out. This stage also could be called as the heart of the research as from this chapter; we can see how the objective has been achieved. Conclusion and recommendations Conclusion and recommendations is the final stage of the research. In this stage the findings will be able to show the result of the research. A conclusion needs to be drawn in-line with the objectives of the research. At the same time, some appropriate recommendations related to the problems will be made for a better solution in relation to the said problem. CONCLUSION Disputes between parties to construction projects are of great concern to the industry; nevertheless, the subject is dominated by anecdote and hearsay. The study of construction industry disputes, and the causes of those disputes, is essential. In fact, it would seem that effective management action can be taken only if based on reliable evidence and as contract manager it is essential for them to consider all kinds of dispute in construction industry.
